French Baroque Painter
Lubin Baugin (c. 1610 - 1663) was a French Baroque painter and still-life specialist. He was born in Pithiviers, a small town near Orléans in France, and trained in Paris under the Flemish painter Frans Pourbus the Younger. Baugin is best known for his still life paintings of fruit, flowers, and kitchen utensils, which are often arranged in a shallow space and illuminated with a soft, diffused light.
Baugin worked for a variety of patrons, including the French court. He is also known to have collaborated with the artist Simon Vouet on several projects, and his work shows the influence of Vouet's elegant style.
Baugin's early works are characterized by a Mannerist style, with exaggerated poses and distorted figures, but later in his career he shifted towards a more naturalistic style, focusing on the detailed depiction of objects and textures. His still life paintings often include delicate flowers and foliage, and he was known for his ability to capture the translucent quality of glass and the reflective surface of metals.
Baugin died in Paris in 1663, and his work is now held in collections around the world, including the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He is regarded as one of the leading still life painters of the French Baroque period, and his work continues to be admired for its technical skill and beauty.
