Alexandre-François Desportes was a French painter of the Baroque era, active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was born in Champigneulles, France in 1661 and is known for his still life paintings, particularly his depictions of hunting and game scenes.
Desportes was a student of the French artist Charles Le Brun, who was the chief painter to King Louis XIV of France. Desportes’ early works were largely influenced by Le Brun and the French Baroque style, but as he matured, he developed his own distinctive style, characterized by his use of bright colors and his meticulous attention to detail.
In addition to his still life paintings, Desportes was also known for his portraits and landscapes. He was appointed as a painter to the court of King Louis XIV, and was commissioned to create a series of paintings for the Palace of Versailles. He was also a member of the French Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
Desportes was highly regarded in his time and his works can be found in some of the world's leading museums, including the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
