Carl Holsøe was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on November 5, 1863. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he was trained in traditional techniques of painting and drawing. After completing his studies, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, including a trip to Paris where he was exposed to the works of the Impressionist painters.

In the 1890s, Holsøe became associated with the Skagen Painters, a group of artists who gathered in the Skagen area of northern Jutland to paint the natural beauty of the region. This community of artists, which included painters such as P.S. Krøyer, Michael and Anna Ancher, and Viggo Johansen, was instrumental in shaping Holsøe's style and subject matter. He became known for his landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes, which were characterized by their quiet, atmospheric qualities and delicate handling of light and color.

Holsøe's works from the Skagen period are considered some of his finest, and today they are highly prized by art collectors and enthusiasts. In addition to his paintings, he was also a talented printmaker, producing a number of etchings and lithographs throughout his career.

In addition to his art, Holsøe was also known for his eccentric personality and bohemian lifestyle. Despite this, he was highly regarded by his contemporaries and was awarded the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1909 for his contributions to Danish art.

Carl Holsøe died on January 15, 1935 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Despite his relatively short life, he left a lasting legacy as one of Denmark's most talented painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
