American Symbolist Painter
John White Alexander was an American painter and illustrator born on April 10, 1856, in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. He is best known for his portraits, allegorical paintings, and illustrations. Alexander studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium, and later worked in Paris. In 1887, he moved to New York City, where he became a successful portrait painter and illustrator. He was also a member of the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design. Alexander's works can be found in several major art museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He died on 15 May 1915 in New York City.
Alexander was known for his tonalist style, characterized by soft, muted colors and atmospheric effects. He was highly regarded for his ability to capture the mood and character of his subjects in his portraits. In addition to portraits, Alexander created allegorical paintings, such as "The First Step" and "The Flower of Life", which depict women in symbolic or metaphorical settings. He also worked as an illustrator, creating illustrations for magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Scribner's Magazine. Alexander was a versatile artist who was able to successfully work in a variety of mediums, including oil paintings, watercolors, and etchings. He was also a skilled teacher, and several of his students went on to become successful artists in their own right. Despite his success, Alexander was largely forgotten after his death, but in recent years, interest in his work has been revived, and his paintings and illustrations are once again appreciated for their beauty and technical mastery.
