English Romamtic Painter
Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) was an English portrait painter who was born in Bristol, England. He was a child prodigy who began painting at a very young age, and by the age of ten, he was already exhibiting his works.
Lawrence studied at the Royal Academy in London, where he was awarded a gold medal at the age of eighteen for his painting "The Death of General Wolfe." He quickly became one of the most sought-after portrait painters in London, and his clients included members of the royal family, politicians, and other notable figures of the time.
In 1792, Lawrence was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy, and in 1794, he became a full member. He was appointed as the official painter to King George III in 1792 and painted many portraits of the king and his family. He also painted portraits of other members of the royal family, including the future George IV and Queen Charlotte.
In addition to his portraits of the royal family, Lawrence also painted many other notable figures of the time, including Lord Byron, William Wordsworth, and Sir Walter Scott. He was known for his ability to capture the sitter's likeness and his use of vibrant colors and light.
Lawrence's reputation continued to grow, and in 1815, he was knighted by Prince Regent, who would later become George IV. He was also appointed as the President of the Royal Academy in 1820, a position he held until his death.
Despite his success as a painter, Lawrence faced financial difficulties throughout his career. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle and was often in debt. He died in 1830 at the age of 60, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest portrait painters of his time.
