Lorenzo Lotto - St. Jerome

On July 29, 1546, Lorenzo Lotto, recently returned to Venice after a stay in Treviso, noted in his account book that a St. Jerome had been delivered to Vincenzo Frigerio. This painting could be a version of the theme he noted, which was dear to him throughout his career.

It may seem strange that the work could have been attributed in the past to Titian, as so many stylistic and semantic elements indicate Lotto's authorship. Yet the fact is justified by Lotto's approach to Titian's creative spirit at this moment; he was especially influenced in his portraiture. But the pathos typical of Lotto is evident in the anxious attitude of St. Jerome adoring the crucifix.

Following his custom, which is one of the many aspects that relate Lotto to the sensibilities of Northern painting, the artist dwells on the description of a scourge, a book and a lizard on the ground next to the saint. These details would be enough to distance him from the spirit of Titian. Nevertheless, the open colour, saturated with light, remains Titianesque, as in another work by Lotto, which is almost contemporary - 'The Christ in Glory', with Symbols of the Passion in the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna.
