French Baroque Painter
Pierre Mignard (1612-1695) was a French painter, known for his portraits and history paintings. He was born in the town of Troyes in Champagne and initially trained as a locksmith. He later moved to Paris to study painting and became a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture.
Mignard quickly rose to prominence in the French court and was appointed as the official court painter to King Louis XIV. He was known for his portraits of the king, queen, and members of the royal family, as well as prominent members of the court. He was also a prolific painter of religious and mythological scenes, and was considered to be one of the leading painters of his time.
Mignard was known for his smooth and delicate brushwork, and for his ability to capture the individuality of his subjects. He was also noted for his use of color, particularly his use of vibrant hues to convey the richness and grandeur of the court.
Mignard had a long and successful career and was highly respected by his contemporaries. He was a mentor to many young artists, and his influence can be seen in the works of later painters such as Hyacinthe Rigaud and Nicolas de Largillière.
Today, Mignard's paintings can be found in many of the world's leading art museums, including the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Gallery in London.
