Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) was a French painter who is considered one of the most important figures in the development of European painting. He was born in Les Andelys, Normandy, France, and spent most of his career in Rome, Italy.

Poussin was the son of a small landowner and received his early education at a local school. At the age of 18, he moved to Paris to study painting, but was dissatisfied with the teaching methods at the time. He then joined the studio of the Flemish painter Ferdinand Elle in Paris, where he was exposed to the works of Caravaggio and other Italian artists.

Poussin's most famous works include the series of paintings known as the Seven Sacraments, as well as his historical and mythological scenes. Poussin's reputation grew steadily during his lifetime, and he was highly respected by his contemporaries. He was invited to join the prestigious Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris, but declined the offer, preferring to remain in Rome.
