American Impressionist Painter
Edmund Charles Tarbell (April 26, 1862 - August 1, 1938) was an American Impressionist painter and member of the Ten American Painters, a group of American Impressionists who exhibited together from 1898 to 1918. Tarbell is known for his delicate handling of light and color, particularly in his portraits and genre scenes.
Tarbell was born in West Groton, Massachusetts, and showed an early talent for art. He attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he studied under Emil Otto Grundmann and Frank Benson. Tarbell also studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was influenced by the work of the French Impressionists.
After returning to the United States, Tarbell settled in Boston and began teaching at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He became known for his portrait paintings, which captured the personality and character of his subjects in a realistic but flattering manner. Tarbell also painted genre scenes of women and children in domestic settings, often using his own family members as models.
In 1897, Tarbell was one of the founding members of the Ten American Painters, a group of American Impressionists who sought to promote the style in the United States. The group exhibited together until 1918 and was instrumental in bringing Impressionism to a wider audience in America.
Tarbell continued to paint throughout his life, and his work was widely exhibited and collected. He received numerous awards and honors, including election to the National Academy of Design in 1906 and the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1918. Tarbell died in 1938 in New Castle, New Hampshire, where he had lived and worked for many years.
