1617-1681
Dutch Baroque Painter
Gerard Ter Borch (1617-1681) was a Dutch painter known for his masterful depiction of genre scenes, portraits, and historical events. He was born in Zwolle, a city in the Dutch Republic (now the Netherlands), to a prominent family of artists. His father, Gerard Ter Borch the Elder, was a painter, and his brother and sister also became artists.
Ter Borch received his early training from his father, and later studied with the Dutch painter Pieter de Molijn. He then traveled to Italy and Spain, where he was exposed to the work of the great Baroque painters, including Velázquez and Caravaggio. These experiences influenced his artistic style and subject matter, and he developed a keen eye for the subtle nuances of light, color, and form.
Upon his return to the Dutch Republic in the 1640s, Ter Borch established himself as a leading painter of genre scenes and portraits. His works often depicted elegant interior settings and refined figures engaged in leisurely activities, such as music-making, card-playing, and conversation. His attention to detail and his ability to capture the psychological depth of his subjects made his paintings highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.
Ter Borch was also known for his historical paintings, which depicted significant events in Dutch history, such as the signing of the Peace of Münster in 1648. These works were marked by their historical accuracy and their ability to convey the drama and emotion of the moment.
Throughout his career, Ter Borch maintained close ties with other leading artists of his time, including Johannes Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. His influence on the development of Dutch genre painting was profound, and his legacy can be seen in the works of later artists, such as Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin and Francisco de Goya.
Ter Borch died in Deventer, the Netherlands, in 1681, leaving behind a rich and varied body of work that continues to be celebrated today. His paintings can be found in many of the world's leading art museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the National Gallery in London.
