Titian reached the position of official painter of the Venetian Republic at a young age. This post secured him various commissions from many places. He was also commissioned to produce portraits of the ruling Doges for the Palazzo Ducale, the Doge's Palace. Along with this, he had his share of the decorative works for the decoration of the huge palace. Marcantonio Trevisani was Doge of Venice in 1553-1554. His portrait exudes inner dignity and is typical of portrait painting of the mature Renaissance. Titian has painted his model in three-quarters with the hallmarks of his san, a hat and robe of gold brocade. The portrait presents not only the image of an elderly man radiating calm self-confidence, but also his social rank and the function he performed.
