John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was a renowned English painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. He was born in Rome, Italy, to English parents and moved to London with his family at the age of five.

Waterhouse studied at the Royal Academy of Art in London, where he was heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite artists, particularly John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He began exhibiting his paintings at the Royal Academy in 1874 and went on to become a regular exhibitor there for the rest of his career.

Waterhouse's paintings often depicted scenes from classical mythology and literature, and he was known for his highly detailed and realistic style. His use of vibrant colors and delicate brushstrokes helped to create a dreamlike quality in his works.

Some of Waterhouse's most famous paintings include "The Lady of Shalott," "Ophelia," and "The Soul of the Rose." These works, along with many others, helped to establish Waterhouse as one of the leading artists of his time.

Waterhouse was also a member of several artistic organizations, including the Royal Society of British Artists and the Society of Antiquaries. He was awarded the title of Associate of the Royal Academy in 1885 and became a full Academician in 1895.
